Parking is unusually suited to phone-in radio because almost every motorist has an experience or opinion. A caller may begin with “I got a ticket and it was unfair,” but a useful discussion needs to separate the emotional reaction from the legal and factual questions.
Barrie's combination of case experience and public-speaking technique made it possible to deal with complicated circumstances quickly: what document was issued, what restriction applied, what evidence exists and whether there is a recognised route of challenge.
Barrie discussed why motorists often pay rather than contest a penalty and the circumstances in which an appeal may be worth considering.
GB News quoted Barrie in reporting on a large increase in parking fines, continuing his role as a specialist commentator many years after AppealNow was founded.
AppealNow's biography says Barrie also provided technical advice to television programmes, including the BBC's Whistleblowers series. That role is less visible than appearing on screen but can be equally important: producers need to know whether a proposed claim is technically sound before it becomes part of a programme.
